Idéal Brique

Clay quarries, Brickworks

Idéal Brique – 1
Project description

Hydrological and hydraulic study of the « Amira » industrial clay quarry located in the delegation of Beni Hassen – Monastir Governorate

Theme: Management and preservation of water flows

As part of a request for reconsideration aimed at obtaining authorisation to extend the « Amira » industrial clay quarry, located in the delegation of Beni Hassen (Monastir Governorate), and in accordance with the comments issued by the Directorate of Quarries and Explosives, « Idéal Brique » commissioned our consultancy to carry out an in-depth hydrological and hydraulic study.

The main objective of this study is to identify and size the protective measures required to safeguard the existing site, its planned extension and its immediate surroundings against flood risks. It incorporates a detailed analysis of local morphological, climatic and hydrological characteristics. It also aims to preserve natural flows, ensure the project's sustainability and minimise its environmental impacts.

Proposed methodology

The methodology adopted for preparing the flood protection study for the « Amira » quarry and its extension is structured around the following areas:

  • Conducting an in-depth assessment of the current situation regarding flood risk and evaluating the performance of existing structures;
  • Critical review of previous flood protection studies;
  • Identification and characterisation of hydrological units likely to affect urban areas and existing infrastructure, in line with urban planning documents in force or under revision;
  • Assessment of catchment hydrological inflows and analysis of their effects for different return periods (20, 50 and 100 years), accounting for extreme rainfall events and the effects of climate change in Tunisia;
  • Use of Intensity-Duration-Frequency (IDF) curves derived from INM or DGRE data, accompanied by an analysis of climatic parameters (rainfall, temperatures, etc.);
  • Development and comparison of several development options, with technical justification for the optimal solution selected;
  • Preparation of the necessary plans (location, catchment delineation, layout of proposed works) at appropriate scales.
