Project Description

Hydrological and Hydraulic Study of the “Amira” Industrial Clay QuarryLocated in the Beni Hassen Delegation – Monastir Governorate

Theme: Flow Management and Preservation

As part of a reassessment request aimed at obtaining authorization for the extension of the “Amira” industrial clay quarry, located within the Beni Hassen delegation (Monastir Governorate), and in accordance with the observations issued by the Directorate of Quarries and Explosives, the company “Idéal Brique” has commissioned our firm to carry out a comprehensive hydrological and hydraulic study.

The primary objective of this study is to identify and design the necessary protection measures to ensure the safety of the existing site, its planned extension, and the surrounding environment against flood risks. It includes a detailed analysis of local morphological, climatic, and hydrological characteristics. Furthermore, the study aims to preserve natural flow patterns, ensure the long-term sustainability of the project, and minimize its environmental impacts.

Proposed Methodology

The methodological approach adopted for the development of the flood protection study for the “Amira” quarry and its extension is structured around the following key components:

  • Conducting a comprehensive assessment of the current situation with respect to flood risk, including the evaluation of the performance of existing infrastructure;
  • Performing a critical review of previous flood protection studies;
  • Identifying and characterizing hydrological units likely to impact urban areas and existing infrastructure, in alignment with current or revised urban planning documents;
  • Assessing watershed runoff contributions and analyzing their impacts for different return periods (20, 50, and 100 years), taking into account extreme rainfall events and the effects of climate change in Tunisia;
  • Utilizing Intensity-Duration-Frequency (IDF) curves derived from data provided by INM or DGRE, along with an analysis of climatic parameters (rainfall, temperature, etc.);
  • Developing and comparing several design alternatives, with technical justification for the selected optimal solution;
  • Producing the required drawings (site layout, watershed delineation, and proposed infrastructure plans) at appropriate scales.
