As part of its support to industrial operators in the sustainable management and valorization of mineral resources, BUT Géologie has carried out a comprehensive technical assessment covering geological mapping, mining method design, and the characterization of exploitable reserves for a marl quarry located at Jbel Oust, within the Bir M’Chergua delegation (Zaghouan Governorate).
The objective of this assignment is to enhance the understanding of the deposit through an integrated approach combining detailed geological mapping and in-depth structural analysis. The ultimate goal is to develop a reliable geological model that serves as a solid basis for the rigorous estimation of geological and recoverable reserves, while taking into account the technical, geometrical, and regulatory constraints associated with quarry operations.
A Structured Three-Phase Methodological Approach
Phase 1: Topographic Baseline Update
A high-precision topographic map at a scale of 1:2,000, updated as of January 16, 2026, was produced. This document serves as the fundamental reference for both operational activities and reserve estimation.
Phase 2: Detailed Geological Study of the Deposit
This phase enabled the development of a comprehensive understanding of the site’s geological framework through:
- Detailed regional and local geological mapping, identifying outcropping formations and their spatial distribution;
- The production of geological cross-sections illustrating the geometry and structural relationships of geological units;
- The preparation of lithostratigraphic logs describing lithological successions and facies variations;
- The development of a 3D geological model (block diagram), providing a synthetic and visual representation of the deposit’s architecture.
Phase 3: Mining Optimization and Reserve Estimation
Based on the established geological model, an appropriate mining method was defined to ensure optimal resource recovery. This phase includes:
- The implementation of a selective mining scheme tailored to lithological characteristics and operational constraints;
- The calculation of geological and recoverable reserves, including a precise quantitative estimation of volumes and material classification.
A Strategic Decision-Making Tool
The outcomes of this technical assessment provide SINOMA CEMENT Co., Ltd. – Les Ciments de Jbel Oust with a robust decision-support tool. They enable effective mine planning, optimization of the quarry’s lifespan, and ensure safe, efficient, and industry-compliant operations aligned with best practices.
